The launch of Alfreton UK

This week we launched a very simple website http://www.alfretonuk.co.uk

The long term vision of the Alfreton UK is to become a focal point for people abroad to find and to sign post them to internet sites and other local resources. We get hits and enquiries from all around the world and often people need help in finding information (Google is never as well informed as people on the ground!).

Recently, Alfreton Online Community Forum - http://www.alfretononline.co.uk had an email from Australia asking about a village near to Ashbourne. The enquirer couldn't find anything on the internet, and with our help it took us just a few minutes to point him in the direction of some useful websites. This is a classic example of how our websites help people to find local information and resources in and around Alfreton.

Alfreton UK website - http://www.alfretonuk.co.uk is a simple picture gallery (hit f5 to see random images of the town) of the town and it has up to date pictures taken from http://www.alfretonwiki.co.uk website.

Photo Appeal - If you have some pictures of Alfreton Town, people, places, businesses etc. please contact us through http://www.alfretonderbyshire.co.uk website and we will be pleased to display them in our Alfreton Gallery.

We are also looking for historical photographs from the Alfreton area to go into an online Gallery on our Alfreton History Website - http://www.alfretonhistory.co.uk. If you can help, please do let us know.

Alfreton Wiki PDF Print E-mail

Whats a Wiki?

Well, Wiki stands for "What I Know Is..." and its a term used to describe people coming together through an online forum to collaboratively piece information together on a wide variety of subjects. The most noteable is wikipedia - one of the worlds highest ranking and indexed sites on the internet.

Alfreton Fellowship has just recently launched its new online community forum for Alfreton called The Alfreton Wiki Project.

The project aims to become the centre of all knowledge and information regarding the Alfreton area through a collaborative process of contributions from local people.

If you'd like to get involved, please visit http://www.alfretonwiki.co.uk and simply just add your information and knowledge - its that simple!

We expect a range of people to get involved including local businesses who have an opportunity to create their own public record of the business services and activities they perform and to add a synopsis of the business history too. We would also expect people with local intertest and community groups to use the wiki as a method of providing information to local people in and around Alfreton.

Examples of how local Alfreton groups could use the Alfreton Wiki; an organisation like Alfreton Shopmobility could add information about the disability services they provide to people in the area or Alfreton Town Football Club could add information about the history of the club and the players in the team.

UK Earthquake PDF Print E-mail

http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ous/STORE/X2008nyae/ciim_display.html

use this link to track the UK earthquake responses on 27th February 2008.

Did the earth move for you last night?

If you were fast asleep you may have missed it, but my whole home shook from side to side as Derbyshire experienced its biggest earthquake for years.

The tremor was big enough to shake whole houses and wake most people up from their sleep.

The shock wave was felt as far away as Leiciester and at 1.14am as i write this, there is no local or internet news reporting.

27th February 2008 at 1.04am Derbyshire in the East Midlands experienced a large earthquake.

Log on and tell us about your expediences of the earth tremor.

This is my account which i have reported on the US Geological Survey website..... The quake was a rather small tremor for 2 or 3 seconds to begin. I was sat down at the time in a swivel chair and it felt like the chair was bouncing. However something made me feel that the sensation was "unnatural". I've never experienced an Earthquake before. After the first tremor ended a second much more powerful one began (two or three seconds later) which shook the whole place for around 5 or 6 seconds - i could feel the whole building shaking from side to side - I thought it could be either a bomb (nuclear or something of that nature) then i rationalised it was an earthquake. UK News reports at 01.52am GMT damage to buildings and property in Lincolnshire - near to the epicentre.
